Jackie VanNoy, Artist

“ I love a blank canvas. I bring to it a word that won’t leave me alone or maybe a voice spoken to me that spurs me on into the arena of brushes, paints and fresh adventure. My first instinct is to lay down a line that squeezes the passion of the word onto the substrate before me and let that expression suggest the next move. Color somehow is suggested to me by the movement of that first mark, so the strokes go down, one color playing and responding to another, allowing both harmonies and dissonances along the way. My goal is to create just enough balance where it speaks and sings back to me, and unveils more to me than I was aware of when I began. “ ~Jackie VanNoy

Jackie Pitkin VanNoy is a painter and contemporary calligrapher living in the Pacific Northwest.  She began her formal studies in the arts at the State University of New York at Buffalo and since then has pursued interests in several art forms besides painting including calligraphy, collage, quilt design and large-scale fabric constructions. Jackie’s study of calligraphy began with traditional western letterforms and soon led her to the awareness of contemporary calligraphy around the world.  She found this direction of study to be rewarding   personally, and it soon became instrumental in developing a new painting direction.  She has studied with both experimental and traditional calligraphers from England, the United States, Germany and the Netherlands.

Jackie has taught classes and given demonstrations on Painting, Creativity and Collage Design for artist organizations around the Northwest and served as juror for the Northwest Collage Society and Edmonds Arts Festival.  Her work has been reproduced in Artist’s Magazine, and she has shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions, receiving both national and regional awards.  She is a Signature member of Women Painters of Washington. Jackie is represented by Women Painters of Washington Gallery in Seattle, WA.  She maintains her home studio in Port Ludlow, WA.
